Skin peels, also known as chemical peels, are cosmetic treatments that involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin. The solution causes the outermost layers of the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off, revealing smoother, rejuvenated skin underneath.

There are different types of skin peels available, ranging from mild to deep, and they can be tailored to address specific skin concerns. The three main types of chemical peels are:

1. Superficial or Light Peels: These peels are the mildest and involve the application of a gentle acid solution, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). They primarily target the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and provide a mild exfoliation. Superficial peels are generally used to improve skin texture, brighten the complexion, and treat mild acne or sun damage.

2. Medium Peels: Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting the outer and middle layers (epidermis and dermis). They often use stronger acids, such as glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), to remove damaged skin cells. Medium peels can effectively address concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and acne scars.

3. Deep Peels: Deep peels are the strongest type of chemical peels and target the deepest layers of the skin. They involve the use of a strong acid, such as phenol, to deeply exfoliate the skin. Deep peels are typically used to address severe skin concerns, such as deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, and precancerous skin growths. Due to their potency, deep peels require longer recovery time and may require sedation or anesthesia during the procedure.
